Architecture Tour of Berlin

A 3-hour private walking tour through 800 years of Berlin’s built history, led by a trained architect.

Berlin’s history, written in its buildings

Berlin’s history is written into its buildings. War, ideology, division, and reconstruction have all left physical traces on the city.

This tour uses architecture as a way into understanding how people lived, the ideas that shaped society, war and how power was expressed at different moments.

By focusing on the built environment, the tour offers a clearer, more grounded way of understanding the city. Through the built environment, the tour connects politics and history to everyday life.

What you’ll see

  • A medieval church that survived the war
  • A 13th century village that was bulldozed and then rebuilt as a socialist showpiece
  • A maze of interconnected courtyards built for Berlin’s 19th century working class
  • A bombed-out church left deliberately unrepaired as a monument against war
  • The site where East and West met — Potsdamer Platz, once the busiest intersection in Europe, then a death strip, now a forest of glass towers

Who is this tour for?

This tour is ideal for:

  • Curious travellers who want more in-depth discussion
  • Visitors interested in architecture, history, politics, or urban change
  • People who enjoy thoughtful, conversation-based experiences
  • Guests looking for a private, slower-paced way to explore Berlin

This tour is probably not the best fit for:

  • Visitors looking for a fast, checklist-style tour
  • People who prefer a fully scripted experience

What makes it different?

Understand Berlin through architecture, not just dates and landmarks. Many tours use buildings as a backdrop, this tour treats them as historical evidence.

As an architect, I focus on how urban planning, housing, materials, and spatial decisions reflect political ideas, social priorities, and moments of rupture in Berlin’s history.

Rather than moving quickly between highlights, the tour slows down to ask why the city looks the way it does — and what those choices meant for the people who lived here.

What is the experience like?

The tour is designed to be thoughtful and discussion-led, with time to stop, look closely, and ask questions. Rather than moving quickly between landmarks, we slow down to read the city, to understand why buildings look the way they do, and what that tells us about the people who built them.

The focus is on understanding and discovery, not information overload.

Frequently asked questions

The pace is relaxed and can be adapted to your needs. We take breaks and adjust the route as required. You can also choose to do this tour as a private vehicle tour, which reduces the amount of walking. Simply get in touch with me to organise a private car!

No. The tour is designed for curious visitors, not specialists. Architectural ideas are explained clearly and connected to everyday life and history.

This is a private tour, so you’ll have my full attention and we can linger longer on what interests you most. The core route and stops are set — covering 800 years of Berlin’s built history across Mitte and the city centre — but the conversation and depth adjusts naturally to your group. If you’re interested in a custom tour, you can find more information here.

Tours run in light rain, but plans can be adapted if weather conditions are uncomfortable.

The tour covers central Berlin, starting at the Marienkirche and moving through the Nikolaiviertel, Hackescher Höfe, and Potsdamer Platz, finishing at the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche. Along the way we look at buildings from medieval, Prussian, Nazi, Communist, and reunified Berlin — all within walking distance or a short train ride of each other.

The private architecture tour costs €300 for the whole group, for up to 10 people. The price is per group, not per person, making it excellent value for families and small groups.
